Redevelopment of the piazza began in 2006, when an International Design Competition won by Arch. Cellini envisaged the creation of a connecting area between the monument and the plaza, situated on a downhill slope, with the lower section hosting a number of services necessary to integrate the monument into the network of urban relations. Automobile space will be reduced to a minimum, thus obtaining a pedestrian zone, while light ramps and paths partly still paved with travertine from first century B.C. will transform the Mausoleum of Augustus into a contemporary archaeological experience, with the addition of new retail space in the area, benefitting from great visibility.
